Safe Essential oil usage Guide
Dilution, Storage, and General Safety Guidelines
Essential oils are highly concentrated botanical extracts and must be handled with care.
Topical Application (Applying to Skin)
-
Always Dilute: Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin undiluted ("neat"), with the exception of Lavender or Tea Tree for minor, localized spots (used cautiously).
-
Carrier Oils: Always mix essential oils with a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Almond Oil) before applying to the skin.
-
Standard Dilution Rates:
-
General Adult Use: 2−3% dilution (10-15 drops per 1 ounce of carrier oil).
-
Sensitive Skin/Facial Use: 0.5%−1% dilution (3-6 drops per 1 ounce of carrier oil).
-
High-Potency Oils (Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass): Do not exceed 0.5% dilution for topical use.
-
-
Patch Test: Before applying a new oil liberally, apply a small, diluted amount to an inconspicuous patch of skin (e.g., inside the elbow) and wait 24 hours for any reaction.
Inhalation and Diffusing
-
Diffuser Use: Use an ultrasonic diffuser in well-ventilated areas. Diffuse for 30–60 minutes and then take a break. Over-diffusing can be irritating.
-
Direct Inhalation: Safe for adults. Inhale briefly directly from the bottle or place 1-2 drops on a cotton ball.
Phototoxicity Warning
Certain oils, known as Phototoxic Oils, can cause severe skin burning, blistering, or discoloration when skin is exposed to UV light (sunlight or tanning beds) after application.
-
Phototoxic Oils in Our Inventory: Lemon, Pink Grapefruit, and Bergamot (unless labeled as Bergaptene-Free/BF).
-
Rule: If you apply a phototoxic oil to your skin, avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds for at least 12 to 18 hours.
General Precautions
-
Avoid Sensitive Areas: Keep all oils away from eyes, inner ears, mucous membranes, and broken or damaged skin.
-
Children and Pets: Consult a professional before using oils on or near children and pets.
-
Storage: Store bottles tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and out of reach of children.
-
Internal Use: Do not ingest essential oils unless specifically directed by a clinical aromatherapist or health care professional
